As Kenzan launched when the series was still relatively new, Ishin boasts a much larger cast of familiar characters to model its own after, due to the series increasing its cast significantly since then. Tatsuya is forced to fight it out in the Dragon Heat fighting arena with the aim of winning ten consecutive battles, where his prowess in combat earns him the nickname "The Mad Dragon of Kamurocho". The game does feature the Florist of Sai, who players know from the main series, but none of the major characters from the other Yakuza titles make an appearance. The game takes place in Kyoto and is set in the Edo period in 1605. It follows Miyamoto Musashi, a historical Japanese swordsman, but with a Yakuza twist — Musashi is physically the same in appearance as Kazuma Kiryu, although obviously, he wears the proper dress and hairstyle of the era.

By interacting with the 龍が如く維新 cupboard in the house, the peddling menu is accessed. This involves selling vegetables, fish, meals, or other items in order to earn money to pay off Haruka's debt. After earning certain amounts of money by peddling, a postman will come to the door when the player enters the garden with a letter from the debt collector.
The highest combo score achieved during a battle, along with other factors such as heat actions used, contributes to the letter grade given at the end of the battle; a higher grade means more experience points. Wild Dancehas Ryoma using both katana and pistol in rhythmic "dance"-like style. Though this is the weakest of the styles, with no defensive capabilities, it is also the quickest and most reliable for taking on larger groups of enemies. Like its predecessor Kenzan, Ishin takes place in feudal Japan, this time during the 1800s and focusing on the life of Ryoma Sakamoto, another real-life figure in Japan's history. After the murder of both his mentor and father figure, Sakamoto goes undercover to find out the identity of the swordsman who took them down.
They left a debt of 100 Ryo and a man says he is going to take the family home away to pay it off. Haruka is distressed by this as the home holds a lot of memories for her. A Shinto priest is pleading with the man to give her time to pay off the debt as she is only a child, but the man is unmoved. Ryoma says that he will help to look after her and help to pay off her debt, but she will have to work for it.
In 1866, after finishing sword training in Edo, Sakamoto Ryōma returns to his hometown in Tosa. (translates to "Like a Dragon Restoration!"; unofficially known by fans as Yakuza Ishin) is the second samurai-based Spin-Off of the Yakuza series. It was released on February 22, 2014, for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
